VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide) is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide the body uses across many systems — from blood-vessel dilation to immune regulation to the brain’s master clock. It is studied (often intranasally) for its broad anti-inflammatory and regulatory effects.
How VIP works
VIP signals mainly through the VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors, raising cellular cAMP. Physiologically it dilates blood vessels, relaxes smooth muscle, exerts broad anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating effects, and helps trigger glucose-dependent insulin release. It is also a key signal in the brain’s suprachiasmatic nucleus, where it helps synchronise the circadian clock.
What the research shows
- Receptor selectivity (Nicole et al., 2000). Mapped the VIP residues that determine VPAC1 vs VPAC2 binding.
- Neurological targets (White et al., 2010). Reviewed VIP/VPAC signalling as a therapeutic target in neurological disorders.
- Circadian role (Lucassen et al., 2012). Showed VIP’s role in how the brain’s clock encodes day length.
