Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide that sits at the very top of the body’s reproductive hormone system. The commonly used form, kisspeptin-10, is the active fragment that switches on the cascade leading to LH, FSH and the sex hormones.
How kisspeptin works
Kisspeptin-10 activates the KISS1R (GPR54) receptor on GnRH neurons in the hypothalamus, triggering GnRH release. That prompts the pituitary to secrete LH and FSH, which drive the gonads to make testosterone or estradiol. Because it sits at the apex of this chain, kisspeptin is described as a master regulator of the reproductive axis; human brain-imaging work also shows it modulates areas involved in sexual and emotional processing.
What the research shows
- Stimulates LH in men (George et al., 2011). Kisspeptin-10 robustly stimulated LH secretion and increased LH pulse frequency in healthy men.
- First human study (Dhillo et al., 2005). Kisspeptin raised circulating LH, FSH and testosterone in men.
- Brain processing (Comninos et al., 2017). A randomised fMRI trial showed kisspeptin enhanced limbic responses to sexual and emotional stimuli.
Candour: human evidence is early-stage — small, mostly short mechanistic studies (largely from one UK research group); kisspeptin is not an established therapy. Use belongs under a physician’s guidance.
