5-Amino-1MQ is not a peptide but a small molecule — an inhibitor of the enzyme NNMT (nicotinamide N-methyltransferase). It is studied for metabolism and fat tissue, where blocking NNMT has produced striking effects in animal models.
How 5-Amino-1MQ works
NNMT uses SAM (S-adenosylmethionine) to methylate nicotinamide, consuming both. By selectively inhibiting NNMT, 5-Amino-1MQ is reported to raise cellular NAD+ and SAM levels and shift fat-cell metabolism toward energy expenditure. In animal studies this has been linked to reduced fat mass and improved metabolic and insulin measures.
What the research shows
- Reversed diet-induced obesity (Neelakantan et al., 2018). Membrane-permeable NNMT inhibitors reduced adipose mass and reversed diet-induced obesity in mice.
- NNMT knockdown (Kraus et al., Nature 2014). Knocking down NNMT in fat tissue protected mice from diet-induced obesity and glucose intolerance.
- Metabolic improvement (Kannt et al., 2018). A small-molecule NNMT inhibitor improved insulin sensitivity and reduced body weight in metabolic-disease models.
