BPC-157 — short for “Body Protection Compound-157” — is a synthetic pentadecapeptide (15 amino acids) derived from a protective protein found in human gastric juice. It is one of the most discussed peptides in recovery research, studied mainly for how it may support the healing of tendon, ligament, muscle and gut tissue.
How BPC-157 works
Most of BPC-157’s proposed effects trace back to blood flow and tissue repair. In animal models it promotes angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), largely by up-regulating VEGF and activating the nitric-oxide (eNOS) pathway, which is studied in relation to circulation in injured-tissue models. It has also been reported to increase growth-hormone-receptor expression in tendon fibroblasts and to drive fibroblast migration and collagen organisation through the FAK-paxillin signalling pathway.
What the research shows
- Tendon-to-bone healing (Krivic et al., 2006). In rats, BPC-157 was examined for Achilles tendon-to-bone tissue outcomes measured functionally, biomechanically and histologically, including under corticosteroid conditions.
- Angiogenesis in muscle & tendon (Brcic et al., 2009). BPC-157 was studied for VEGF-associated angiogenesis in muscle and tendon models.
- Tendon-cell behaviour (Chang et al., 2011). BPC-157 increased tendon fibroblast outgrowth, survival and migration via the FAK-paxillin pathway.
- Growth-hormone receptor (Chang et al., 2014). BPC-157 up-regulated GH-receptor expression in tendon fibroblasts, potentiating GH-driven proliferation.
Important candour: the BPC-157 evidence base is overwhelmingly preclinical — chiefly rat and cell-culture studies, many from a single research group — with very limited human data. It is not an established treatment. Use belongs under a physician’s guidance.
