Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide anxiolytic developed in Russia — a stabilised analog of the natural immune peptide tuftsin. It is studied for anxiety, reportedly without the sedation or dependence of benzodiazepines.
How Selank works
Selank adds a Pro-Gly-Pro tail to the tuftsin tetrapeptide, making it resist enzymatic breakdown. Preclinical research links its calming effect to several pathways at once: modulation of GABA and serotonin systems, increased hippocampal BDNF, and slowed breakdown of the body’s own enkephalins. The result studied is anxiety relief without the sedation typical of GABA-drug anxiolytics.
What the research shows
- GAD comparison (Zozulia et al., 2008). A clinical study in generalised anxiety and neurasthenia compared Selank with the benzodiazepine medazepam.
- Mechanism review (Vyunova et al., 2018). Reviewed Selank’s molecular actions and receptor interactions.
- Anxiolytic synergy (Kasian et al., 2017). In rats, Selank enhanced diazepam’s anxiety-reducing effect under chronic stress.
Candour: the evidence base is mostly Russian preclinical (rodent) work plus small human studies; there are no large independent randomised trials. Use belongs under a physician’s guidance.
