What is Thymosin Alpha-1?
Thymosin alpha-1 (Tα1, thymalfasin) is a 28-amino-acid immune-modulating peptide, originally isolated from the thymus — the gland that trains the immune system. It is one of the most clinically studied immune peptides, used in some countries as an adjunct in infection and as a vaccine adjuvant.
How thymosin alpha-1 works
Tα1 is an immunomodulator that acts on both innate and adaptive immunity. It signals through Toll-like receptors (notably TLR2, TLR4 and TLR9) on dendritic cells, activating downstream pathways that shape cytokine output and promote the maturation of helper (CD4+) and cytotoxic (CD8+) T cells — helping the immune system rebalance and respond.
What the research shows
- Chronic hepatitis B (Mutchnick et al., 1999). A randomized, placebo-controlled Phase 3 trial evaluating Tα1 in chronic HBV.
- Severe sepsis — ETASS (Wu et al., Critical Care 2013). A multicenter randomized trial of Tα1 as immunomodulatory therapy in severe sepsis.
- Vaccine response (Gravenstein et al., 1989). In older men, Tα1 enhanced the antibody response to influenza vaccine in a placebo-controlled study.
Context & candour: internationally, Tα1 is marketed as Zadaxin (thymalfasin) for hepatitis and as an immune adjuvant — noted for context only. Its human evidence comes from modest, mostly single-region trials, so findings are promising but not definitive. Use belongs under a physician’s guidance.

What Thymosin Alpha 1
is studied for
Here’s a plain-English look at the areas researchers focus on with thymosin alpha-1 — context to discuss with your physician, not medical advice.
Immune modulation
Acts on innate and adaptive immunity via Toll-like receptors on dendritic cells.
T-cell maturation
Promotes maturation of CD4+ helper and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells.
Infection research
Studied as an adjunct in chronic hepatitis and severe sepsis trials.
Vaccine adjuvant
Enhanced antibody response to influenza vaccine in older adults.
Thymus-derived
Based on a natural peptide from the immune-training thymus gland.
Frequently asked questions
What does Thymosin Alpha-1 do?
Thymosin Alpha-1 is an immune-modulating peptide. It signals through Toll-like receptors on dendritic cells and supports T-cell maturation, acting on both the innate and adaptive immune system.
Where does Thymosin Alpha-1 come from?
It is a 28-amino-acid peptide first isolated from the thymus, the gland that trains the immune system. The synthetic form is also known as thymalfasin.
Is there human evidence for Thymosin Alpha-1?
Yes, more than for most peptides. It has been studied in clinical trials and is used in some countries alongside treatment for infections and as a vaccine adjuvant.
How much Thymosin Alpha-1 should I take?
Dosing, frequency and injection site are set by the prescribing physician for each person, so we don’t give dosing advice. If you need help with the mixing math for a dose your physician has set, our free peptide reconstitution calculator works it out for any vial size.
